11th January 2019 - Art Marcum & Matt Holloway to Pen New Draft

Writers Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Men in Black: International, Iron Man, Transformers: The Last Knight) are in final talks to write the new draft of Masters of the Universe, which Adam Aaron Nee will direct.

Currently, Masters of the Universe had a release date of this year on December 20, but getting an event production of this magnitude up and running will take time. So it’s quite conceivable we could see that release date move into 2020.

19th April 2018 - Aaron and Adam Nee Tapped to Direct

Sony Pictures and Mattel have tapped the directing duo of Aaron and Adam Nee to helm the He-Man movie “Masters of the Universe,” sources tell Variety.

The movie will be based on the beloved Mattel toyline, which spawned a successful animated TV series (1983-85) as well as a 1987 film. The property centers on the warrior He-Man, the last hope of a magical land called Eternia. Dolph Lundgren starred in the original pic as the title character, while Frank Langella played the villainous Skeletor.

The pic is written by David Goyer, who is also an executive producer. Goyer had circled the director’s chair, but prior engagements forced him to pass on directing, though insiders say he is extremely involved in the development of the film.

  • 19th August 2015 - Christopher Yost to Rewrite Script
After helping shape the world of Asgard, “Thor” scribe Christopher Yost is now ready to head to Eternia to help He-Man return to the bigscreen.

Terry Rossio and Jeff Wadlow wrote previous drafts of “Masters of the Universe,” which is being produced by Escape Artists principals Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch along with DeVon Franklin.

  • 10th January 2014 - Frontrunner Directors Revealed
The names are pretty stellar in the Sci-Fi world and are as follows: Joe Cornish (ATTACK OF THE BLOCK), Rian Johnson (LOOPER), Andy Muschietti (MAMA), Kirk DeMicco & Chris Sanders (THE CROODS) and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 JUMP STREET).

  • 30th July 2012 - Jon M. Chu in Talks to Direct
Jon M. Chu is in talks to helm Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists.

Talks are just getting underway with Chu, who is in the middle of a 3D conversion on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and is preparing to shoot a couple of new scenes for the film, which was pushed to a March 29, 2013 release by Paramount. The Masters film revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor.

  • 12th April 2010 - Mike Finch and Alex Litvak Drafting Script
We can add Mike Finch and Alex Litvak to the names of screenwriters who have attempted to adapt the Mattel toy line “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” to the big screen. Columbia has hired the duo, whose script for the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators franchise relaunch finally got that project out of long time development hell, to hopefully work similar magic on the toy property.

  • 23rd September 2009 - Sony Developing Live-Action Adaptation
As for He-Man, Sony is finalizing a deal to produce a bigscreen adaptation of Mattel’s popular action figure line, with Escape Artists shepherding the project.

The property, which originated in 1983 as an animated series and toy line, had previously been set up at Warner Bros., where Joel Silver had been developing a pic since 2007. Mattel wound up taking back the rights and leaving the lot after Mattel, the studio and Silver couldn’t agree on the creative direction of the film (Daily Variety, Sept. 9).

Sony and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will now start developing the project from scratch for Columbia Pictures, sources close to the negotiations said.

16th May 2019 - Robert Pattinson Frontrunner to Star as Batman

While a deal has not yet been made and it is unclear if there is an offer on the table, Robert Pattinson is a top contender play Batman in Matt Reeves' DC movie for Warner Bros.

It is also unclear who else is on Reeves' short list, other names that have been floated alongside Pattinson's were Armie Hammer, Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

While a report declared that Twilight Saga star Rob Pattinson had been set for The Batman, Deadline hears that the filmmaker and Warner Bros haven’t gotten to that place yet. Pattinson is on a short list but so is Nicholas Hoult, who stars in Tolkien. Sources say they like both guys, with Pattinson holding the edge

30th January 2019 - Release Date Revealed; Ben Affleck Not Returning

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros. is dating their next rendition of Batman for June 25, 2021. This is the one that Matt Reeves has been attached to as writer and director. Ben Affleck, we hear, will not be donning the Dark Knight’s tights after playing the Caped Crusader in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League and that’s because this movie will focus on a younger Bruce Wayne.

Affleck worked hard on The Batman story, but knew he wasn’t the right one for this particular version. A search is underway for a new Dark Knight.

30th January 2019 - Rogues Gallery to Be Featured

Have you begun the casting process?

There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We're starting to put together our battle plan. I'm doing another pass on the script and we'll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.

What's your goal as far as a release date?

We haven't been dated. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.

15th October 2018 - Warner Bros Not Moving Forward with Ben Affleck; Role Expected to Be Recast

Following the box office disappointment of “Justice League,” Warner Bros. has been reevaluating its approach to making movies based on DC Comics characters. The studio is not moving forward with Batman and Superman movies featuring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively. It is expected to recast the Dark Knight with a different actor.

2nd August 2018 - Matt Reeves Provides Update

“We are working on getting our draft in the next couple of weeks and things are progressing,” Matt Reeves said at TCA today. He hopes cameras roll sometime next spring or early summer.

Reeves’ Batman will be completely separate from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight universe yet will still be “noir-driven in which Batman is investigating a particular case that takes us out into the world of Gotham”.

Reeves waved off rumors that his Batman would focus on a young caped crusader or Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One which is one of his favorite Batman comics.

13th June 2018 - Believed to Be Focussing on Younger Batman

The big question mark going forward is the future of Batman. Writer-director Matt Reeves turned in the first act of a new screenplay during the Memorial Day weekend. It's said to focus on a young caped crusader, and while the studio would not comment, it's unlikely that Ben Affleck, who has played Batman in three features, will again don the cowl.

21st July 2017 - Ben Affleck's Batman Future in Doubt as Warner Bros. Plots Franchise

Ben Affleck is heading to Comic-Con this weekend to promote Warner Bros.’ upcoming Justice League movie, set for a Nov. 17 release. But how many more times is he likely to put on the Batsuit? Probably not many, if ever again.

Yes, Warners’ film studio chief Toby Emmerich tells The Hollywood Reporter, "Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can." And Matt Reeves, who will direct the studio’s still-undated (and unwritten) The Batman, has said that he means to keep Affleck in the role. But a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.

Exactly when and how that might happen has yet to be determined, but it would be wise to bet against Affleck starring in The Batman. Already he has stepped away from directing the film and Reeves is dropping the script that Affleck wrote with D.C. Entertainment’s Geoff Johns.

12th July 2017 - Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns' Script Scrapped

The filmmaker, who stepped into replacing star Ben Affleck as director on the project, recently revealed on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast that he scrapped a script by Affleck and DC's Geoff Johns.

When asked if he would be working with Affleck's script, Reeves said, "No, it’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.”

10th July 2017 - Director Aiming for a Noir Vibe

17th March 2017 - Production Likely Won't Start Until 2018

23rd February 2017 - Matt Reeves Closes Deal to Direct

Matt Reeves has closed a deal to direct and produce The Batman for Warner Bros.

"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child," Reeves said in a statement. "He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen."

17th February 2017 - Negotiations Break Down for Matt Reeves to Direct

A week after entering negotiations to direct The Batman, Matt Reeves has exited the talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

A studio source confirms that negotiations have broken down. The possibility, however, exists that talks could resume when heads cool. The studio is intent on making the movie no matter what as the Batman franchise has proven to bigger than one person.

Reeves is currently deep in post-production on the Apes sequel, War for the Planet of the Apes, which is shaping up to be the biggest entry in the Fox franchise.

10th February 2017 - Matt Reeves in Talks to Direct

I’ve heard Warner Bros has offered the directing job on its Batman franchise to Matt Reeves, the filmmaker who just finished War for the Planet of the Apes for Fox. This comes weeks after Ben Affleck decided that directing and starring in such a massive undertaking was too much. The emergence of Reeves is hardly a surprise; it was known that he was the filmmaker the studio engaged when Affleck made his decision after weeks of wavering.

Source:

Other directors remain in the wings, including Ridley Scott and Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez.

Affleck remains on board to portray Bruce Wayne/Batman and co-wrote the script with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns. Several sources say, however, that the script may undergo a significant overhaul.

30th January 2017 - Ben Affleck No Longer Directing

Ben Affleck has decided to step down as director of “The Batman” and remain on as a producer and star of the project.

Affleck is still on board to play the superhero, but sources close to the talent said Affleck and Warner Bros. discussed how to make the best film possible and this was the decision both parties came to.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Affleck and Warner Bros. will now begin searching for a new director.

14th December 2016 - Departing WB Exec Reveals 2018 Release Date

“Next year, Batman Lego looks like a monster, and King Kong looks like a global hit and we have Chris Nolan’s Dunkirk, and King Arthur, and Wonder Woman, which is such a joy for the studio and fans. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a big film, and there are others like CHiPS, which feels like a real franchise for the studio. And Toby Emmerich’s films are also really humming.

“Then in 2018, there is a second Fantastic Beasts film, and Ready Player One feels like an ambitious movie by the world’s best filmmaker, Steven Spielberg, that will set the world on fire. There is Aquaman with James Wan, and Scooby Doo will be a huge launch and then there is Lego Ninjago. And then there is Ben Affleck’s Batman.

  • 8th September 2016 - Joe Manganiello Cast as Deathstroke
Batman will face comic book villain Deathstroke, played by “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello, in Ben Affleck’s first solo movie playing the Dark Knight.

DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed the casting in his first interview discussing his new role overseeing Warner Bros.’ movies based on DC Comics characters.

  • 32rd July 2016 - Teaser Logo Unveiled

  • 12th April 2016 - Ben Affleck to Direct
A standalone Batman movie starring and directed by Ben Affleck is officially in the works, Warner Bros. chief Kevin Tsujihara confirmed Tuesday at CinemaCon.

It was reported in July 2015 that Affleck was in talks to star and direct, but Tuesday’s announcement marks the first official confirmation of his involvement. Affleck made his debut as the Caped Crusader in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which bowed March 25.

Tsujihara said the studio has committed to 10 DC films — most of which have already been announced — within the next five years, then named every movie along with their director, including Batman with Affleck.

Warner Bros. confirmed that Affleck would be directing the movie later on Tuesday in a press release.

Riley Smith (Proven Innocent, Frequency, Life Sentence) has been cast as a lead in The CW's Nancy Drew per Deadline.

Nancy Drew (Kennedy McMann) is a brilliant teenaged detective whose sense of self had come from solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine – until her mother's untimely death derails Nancy’s college plans. Devastated by her mother's passing, Nancy swears off crime-solving while crossing off the days until she can re-apply to college. But when a socialite is murdered, Nancy finds herself a prime suspect in the crime, along with a group of other teens present at the scene: Nancy's nemesis from high school, George Fan (Leah Lewis); a rich girl with a mysterious past, Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani); Nancy's secret boyfriend, Ned "Nick" Nickerson (Tunji Kasim), and amiable burnout Ace (Alex Saxon). The five of them must team up to clear their own names – encountering emotional entanglements and even more mysteries along the way. Nancy's reawakening brings her into conflict with her widowed father, Carson Drew (Scott Wolf), who is dating Detective Karen Hart (Alvina August). And, when a supernatural presence begins to haunt Nancy's investigation, she discovers that the current crime has an astonishing connection to the unsolved murder of a local girl. Whether the ghost is here to help, or hinder Nancy remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Nancy’s going to have to unravel the clues from both the living and the dead to solve the crimes.

Smith will play the handsome and affluent Ryan Hudson whose trophy wife is the murder victim. While he has been ruled out as a suspect by the police, Nancy's not so sure.

Smith had been quietly cast as a series regular in the pilot in second position to FOX's Proven Innocent. He became officially available when the legal drama was cancelled.

AMC GREENLIGHTS ITS FIRST EPISODIC ANTHOLOGY SERIES ABOUT THE INTERSECTION OF LOVE AND SCIENCE FROM WILL BRIDGES AND BRETT GOLDSTEIN

NEW YORK, NY, MAY 16, 2019 - AMC announced today that it has greenlit a new, yet-to-be-titled original episodic anthology drama created by Emmy-Award winning writer Will Bridges ("Black Mirror,""Stranger Things") and Brett Goldstein ("Superbob,""Adult Life Skills"). Bridges and Goldstein will executive produce with Jolyon Symonds through Fearless Minds, a Banijay Group company ('Thorne' series for Sky One, "Complicit"). The Untitled Bridges/Goldstein Project, produced by AMC Studios, will consist of six, hour-long episodes, and is slated for a 2020 debut on AMC.

Each episode of the Untitled Bridges/Goldstein Project will feature an entirely new story and different cast, a first-time format for AMC. The series takes place 15 years from now, when science makes a discovery that changes the lives of everyone on the planet - a way to find your soul mate. The series uses the sci-fi conceit to tell six provocative stories about the cost of finding true love, all different in tone and featuring a spectrum of people and relationships. Bridges and Goldstein previously created the short film "For Life," which serves as the basis for this new, original series.

"This is AMC's first foray into non-serialized story-telling, and we're trying to do so in the boldest way possible. The show explores how technological innovation can impact the most delicate matters of the heart, and each episode will turn personal life choices into high-stakes drama. It's a fresh yet relatable idea, portrayed through wildly entertaining tales with unexpected twists, humor, and meaningful emotion," said David Madden, president of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. "Will and Brett are immensely talented creators, and we are thrilled to have these new and observant voices on AMC."

Said Bridges, "I'm thrilled to be working on this show with AMC. To get the opportunity to expand on the short film Brett and I made and tell new stories about how messed up love can make a person is something we're both very grateful for and extremely excited about."

Said Goldstein, "I am extremely excited and honoured to make our show about soulmates with AMC, the network responsible for at least two of my favourite shows, one of which I definitely watched legally."

Will Bridges, Co-Creator/Executive Producer

Bridges co-wrote the Emmy-winning episode "USS Callister" of "Black Mirror" last season directed by Toby Haynes. He recently staffed on Season 3 of "Stranger Things" for Netflix. Bridges also adapted a feature based on the science fiction short story, "Prize Of Peril," which is in development with Studio Canal and Grand Electric. He wrote and directed the short film "Shallow," a thriller starring Dan Stevens.

Brett Goldstein, Co-Creator/Executive Producer

Goldstein successfully juggles life as an actor, writer, comic and director. He co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed feature film "Superbob" with Catherine Tate. He also co-wrote the three 'Nan Specials' that were in the top ten most watched programs in the UK that year. As an actor, Goldstein won the prestigious 2016 BIFA for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Adult Life Skills" with Jodie Whittaker and can next be seen in the SXSW hit "Wild Honey Pie" alongside Jemima Kirke. His television credits include lead roles in "Hoff The Record,""Derek,""Drifters" and "Uncle." Goldstein stared in the hilarious "The Pact" opposite Sarah Solemani of BBC2. He played a lead role in Whitney Cummings' HBO pilot "A Lot" and the NBC/WB Bill Lawrence pilot "Spaced Out."

Jolyon Symonds, Executive Producer

Jolyon Symonds has previously produced award-winning drama and feature films including: the "Thorne" series for Sky One, the BAFTA-winning drama "Complicit" written by Guy Hibbert for Channel 4, the box office hit "Kevin and Perry Go Large," and Danny Brocklehurst's "The Driver" for BBC One.
